Description
“Coastal Birds” is the ninth Chapbook or Photozine from Simon, based on his personal photography.
This Chapbook “Coastal Birds” is A5 in size, made up of 48 pages and featuring 25 photos captured by Simon. Thoughtfully printed on quality, heavy-duty paper (more details below), only 200 will ever be printed of these limited-edition chapbooks. Each one is numbered.
From inside the back cover;
This chapbook series started during a time when our movement was restricted to 5 km from home. Here, on the suburban coast of South County Dublin, two thirds of that area is offshore.
Wild birds abound on the coastal margins of the sprawling city. The mix of wet habitats attracts many pelagic species. The range of urban to rural terrains suits many passerines. Over 154 bird species have been recorded in the twenty year history of the annual Dublin Bird Race. The event is usually won by a team that sights over 100 species in ten hours.
Some birds have become so familiar that we recognise individuals. The Grey Heron to us is Edwina, seen most mornings when we walk the pier in Dún Laoghaire.
The conservation status of bird species is conveyed with a traffic light system. It seems that some of these birds may become locally extinct in our lifetime.
