We often get asked questions about setting up a pottery studio. This page records our experiences in case that can be of any use to you.
In 2016, we had a pottery studio built in our garden. It’s a fully functioning studio with two wheels, two electric kilns, and all the tools, brushes and gadgets required to do pottery. We generally use both terracotta and white clays and concentrate on earthenware firings and the use of coloured slips and mostly clear glazes (with some honey glaze, and other coloured glazes).
We also have a range of paint-on, coloured glazes (mostly Botz and “Stroke and Coat” from Mayco) for simply painting on bisque forms to get some fun and interesting results quickly.
The major pieces of equipment we have are;
- 228 litre top loading kiln from Northern Kilns (Chieftan TL228)
- 36 litre top loading kiln from Northern Kilns (Chieftan TL36)
- Shimpo Whisper RK3E Potter’s Wheel
- “Bailey” Potter’s Wheel from Gladstone Engineering
- 50mm Pug Mill (G49E) from Gladstone Engineering
